Frequently asked questions

What Safety Label does, what it never touches, and how it keeps you in control.

Getting started

What does Safety Label do?

Safety Label helps you meet the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR). It audits every product against the GPSR required fields — a product identifier, the manufacturer's name/address/contact, an EU Responsible Person when the manufacturer is outside the EU, traceability, and safety warnings — scores how complete that data is, gives you a prioritized fix list, and renders the required safety information on your product pages via a theme app-embed.

How do I install and set it up?

Install from the Shopify App Store and open the app — Safety Label reads your products through the Shopify Admin API and runs a first GPSR audit automatically. To show the safety information on your storefront, enable the Safety Label theme app-embed in your theme editor (one toggle). There are no scripts to paste.

Do I need any API keys or paid third-party tools?

No. Auditing, the guided editor, and displaying safety data on your storefront work out of the box. AI auto-fill (drafting safety fields from your existing product text) is included on the paid plans.

How it works

Does a 100 score mean my product is legally compliant?

No. The score measures how COMPLETE your product's GPSR data is against the required fields — it is a data-completeness checklist made objective, not a legal determination that a product is compliant or safe. Safety Label is tooling to collect, render and export that data; you remain responsible for the accuracy of what you enter and for meeting your legal obligations. It is not legal advice.

How does the score work?

Each required field carries a weight, and the score is the share of applicable weight that is present (met weight ÷ required weight × 100). Two fields are conditional: the EU Responsible Person only counts when you mark the manufacturer as non-EU, and safety warnings only count when you flag the product's category as needing them — so a product is never penalised for a field it doesn't need. The full breakdown is on the “How scoring works” page.

Does Safety Label read my orders or customers?

No. Safety Label operates at Protected Customer Data Level 0: it does not request the read_orders or read_customers scopes and is structurally unable to read them. It works only with your products, product metafields, reusable entity records (metaobjects), and theme embed status.

Will it change my store automatically?

Only when you ask it to. You fill the safety fields yourself in the editor, or run AI auto-fill and review the draft — nothing is written until you save. Writes go only to the product's safetylabel metafields; each write is snapshotted so it is reversible. It never touches orders or customers.

How does the AI auto-fill work, and is my data safe?

On the paid plans you can draft the safety fields from a product's existing text with Anthropic. The extraction is grounded: the app discards any value it cannot find in your own product source, so it won't invent a manufacturer or address. Generation runs zero-retention — prompts and responses are not logged; only coarse metadata (token counts, latency) is recorded. Access tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM.

Displaying safety data

How does the information show up on my product pages?

Safety Label writes the data to structured product metafields and ships a theme app-embed (“GPSR safety info”) that renders a clean panel — manufacturer, EU Responsible Person, traceability and warnings — on the product page. Enable it once in your theme editor; it appears only for products that have safety data.

Does it work on a password-protected or brand-new store?

Yes for auditing and filling data — Safety Label reads and writes through the Admin API even when the storefront is private. The storefront panel becomes visible to shoppers once your store is public and the theme app-embed is enabled.

Billing & plans

What's free and what's paid?

Auditing your whole catalog, seeing exactly which fields are missing, and the guided manual editor are free. The paid plans (Pro and Scale) add AI auto-fill and higher-volume workflows for larger catalogs.

Can I upgrade, downgrade or cancel?

Yes — you can change or cancel your plan anytime from the Pricing screen in the app. Billing is handled by Shopify and appears on your regular Shopify invoice. Downgrading keeps all of your safety data; it only changes which paid features are available going forward.

Will I be charged while testing on a development store?

No. Shopify does not bill development stores, so you can install and try Safety Label on a dev store at no cost.

Data & privacy

What data does Safety Label collect?

Your product data and safety metafields (read/written via the Admin API), reusable manufacturer / EU-Responsible-Person records, your shop domain and app settings, billing status, and encrypted access tokens. It stores no customer personal data of any kind.

Is Safety Label GDPR-compliant?

Yes. Safety Label honours Shopify's mandatory GDPR compliance webhooks (customers/data_request, customers/redact, shop/redact). Because it holds no customer personal data, customer requests have nothing to return; a shop-redaction request cascade-deletes all of your shop's data.

Is my data encrypted, and where is it hosted?

Yes. Shopify access tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, all traffic is served over TLS/HTTPS, and content sent to the AI model is processed zero-retention. Data is hosted on a dedicated server in the European Union with encrypted backups.

Will uninstalling Safety Label change or delete my products?

No. Uninstalling removes Safety Label's access and deletes the data it stored. Any safety metafields you saved stay on your products (and remained reversible while the app was installed); uninstalling does not alter your product content.
